The Other Hawaii

Another excellent report from Al-Jazeera. This program show the reality and aspirations of the Hawaiian people. A reality that is usually hidden under the carpet.

In 1983, Hawaii was an independent country with a constitutional monarchy, eighty ambassadors around the world and five friendly treaties with the USA. Then the US marines arrived, arrested the queen, dissolved parliament and militarily occupied the country, and eventually annexed it to the USA ignoring Hawaiians' opinion (90% of Hawaiians signed a petition protesting the coming annexation). They haven't forgotten and are still trying to get their country back.

A quote from the Hawaiian author Haunani Kay-Trak says it all:

"So do I hate the United States? Absolutely, I absolutely hate them. And lots of Hawaiians do. And the mystique of Hawaiians' soft, sweet and kindness is total... that's all propaganda. Lots of us are really, really angry."
